There are no streets in the City of Burnside that begin with the letter X, so this week’s Windback Wednesday feature is AleXandra Avenue in Rose Park and Toorak Gardens.

The avenue was originally laid out in 1878 when the South Australian Company subdivided the area that would become Rose Park. At the time, it was known as The Parade.

In 1908, the street was renamed Alexandra Avenue in honour of Alexandra of Denmark, wife of King Edward VII and daughter-in-law of Queen Victoria. The change also helped avoid confusion with The Parade in nearby Norwood.
